GMME: Meso-scale modelling group

The Mesoscale Meteorology division (GMME : Groupe de Météorologie de Moyenne Echelle) is one of the 5 divisions of the GAME (Groupe d’étude de l’atmosphère Météorologique), part of CNRM affiliated as an Associate Research Unit (URA 1357) to CNRS and Météo-France. It leads basic research on mesoscale and microscale processes of the atmosphere and continental surfaces.

Scientists work on research topics in cloud physics and storms, convective boundary layer, fog, urban meteorology, soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfers, hydrometeorology, remote-sensing of continental surfaces, mesoscale predictability, high-impact weather events and climate change impacts. In all of these areas, research seeks to improve the representation of the mesoscale processes within the Météo-France numerical weather prediction and climate models (ARPEGE, ALADIN, AROME) through development and improvement of physical parametrizations, mesoscale data assimilation, ensemble forecasting methods, downscaled or impact modeling.

The development and improvement of the research community mesoscale MESO-NH model are a continuing collaborative effort among the Mesoscale Meteorology division, the Laboratoire d’aérologie and a number of university scientists. This model is widely used in the mesoscale process studies carried out by GMME, including for carrying out Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of convective/stable boundary layer and clouds. The research on land surface processes sustains the development and improvement of the model SURFEX, which includes the soil-vegetation-atmosphere model ISBA and the town model TEB. The division also develops the global database ECOCLIMAP of soil and ecosystems based on remote sensing of the surface characteristics from operational and research satellites.

To increase our understanding of mesoscale and microscale processes, the Mesoscale Meteorology division designs and participates to field campaigns. PYREX, MAP, FASTEX, CAPITOUL, AMMAor HyMeX are examples of field campaigns initiated and conducted by scientists of GMME.

GMME has approximately 40 permanent staff and an ever-revolving group of about 20-25 students and postdoctoral fellows.
